No place for old tech!

It’s not so long ago that personal computers found their ways to our houses and our hearts and as time goes by, the speed of changes in technology world is madly increasing every day. Among this race, a lot of technologies and devices are retired or forgotten except a few of them that remained exactly the same and are still in use.

The survived hero, IPv4!
Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) is one of the main protocols of internetworking and packet-switched networks that was deployed for production on SATNET in 1982 and on the ARPANET in 1983 and it is still in use!
One of the characteristics of IPv4 is that it uses a 32-bit address space which provide 4,294,967,296 unique addresses and regardless of large blocks of it that are reserved, it was a huge number of IP addresses for its time of announcement. Nowadays that usually every person has several smart devices that need to be connected to the internet and communicate with others, the lack of sufficient IP addresses has been felt. That is why the immigration to IPv6 has been started. IPv4 addresses are still in use for almost 40 years.

The fault in our DSL technology!
One of the main technologies that were used to transfer data and connecting to the internet is “Digital Subscriber Line (DSL)” that used telephone lines for transmitting data. In this technology, the connection between a modem to the internet service provider (ISP) is based on the telephone line and a telecommunication device called “DSLAM” that is connected to the ISP network. Since the DSL technology uses telephone lines, all the connectivity is analog and can be interfered with easily that leads to a poor connection with low bandwidth. The other problem with DSL technology was its limited bandwidth speed, specially for uploading data. Today DSL technology has been replaced with newer technologies such as fiber-optic based connections, 4G/5G technology, point to point wireless, etc. DSL technology is not so popular these days and they are not in use in many countries anymore.
